Law Student Coordinator & Staff Attorney

POSITION
Southern Arizona Legal Aid, Inc.
(“SALA”) is accepting applications for a full-time
staff
attorney. The attorney will work with the Volunteer
Lawyers Program
(“VLP”).
The VLP
recruits the private bar to provide pro bono legal
services to
indigent clients in the areas
of family, consumer, housing,
government benefits,
wills,
and tort law.
The Law Student
Coordinator/Staff Attorney will be responsible for the
continued
development and
implementation of the VLP law
student programs.
The position
will
include the recruitment, training, supervision
and recognition of law students
involved in the VLP law student
projects as well as providing
advice and
assistance to low income clients in civil legal matters.
The professional
selected for this position will work in the Tucson
office.
DESCRIPTION
1.
Coordinate law student
volunteer opportunities including but not limited to the
Service Center Clinic, the Bankruptcy Reaffirmation
Clinic, the Domestic
Relations Follow-Up Clinic, and the Minor Guardianship
Clinic.
2.
Supervise legal work of
approximately 150 law student volunteers each year.
May
include court appearances as necessary.
Coordinate law student training
seminars three times per year.
3.
Organize and carry out
recognition of law students volunteers.
Write monthly
articles for recognized students.
Organize annual spring recognition event.
4.
Organize VLP Advocate efforts
with law school faculty, staff and law student
coordinators.
Serve as contact person for law students.
5.
Advise, and sometimes
represent, low income individuals on family,
consumer,
probate, landlord/tenant
and/or bankruptcy matters.
6. Open, maintain and close client files.
Mantain forms database for the VLP.
Draft motions and other forms for pro se
clients.
7. Design and implement new projects for
VLP volunteers.
8. Other duties assigned by the VLP
Director or the Executive Director.
SALARY
Depending upon experience; excellent
benefits including 12 paid holidays,
health and disability insurance,
malpractice insurance, law school loan
repayment assistance and up to 5%
additional compensation available to
individuals fluent in Spanish
QUALIFICATIONS
Member of
the State Bar of Arizona, Rule 38 eligible or able to sit
for July 2012
exam.
Have a demonstrated
interest in assisting low-income people.
Also,
must be
proficient with WordPerfect, Microsoft Office programs,
email software
and
Internet browsers.
